Running for me has never been only about fitness or speed, racing or results. I run as a way to move through wild places, to feel strong and confident in my body and awake in my mind. I run to be more present in my life. I run to write, to feel ideas move through me as I move. I run to find perspective, high in the mountains, above the tree line, with long sight lines. Running teaches me to meet myself where I am, to love the world as it is. I run to be free.

Unlike many elite ultra runners. I don’t have a coach or follow a rigid training plan. Many days I don’t time myself or keep track of my mileage. I wake up each morning and decide where I want to run, and how far. I go by feel and intuition, by what my body and spirit are telling me. In this way, my approach to running is very simple: When I run happy, I run healthy.

I believe anybody can be a runner. If it’s in you, if you want it, you can do it. You don’t have to be fast or look like a runner. Any body can run. You don’t have to be good. You just have to keep going.

In 2018, two years after I broke my leg in a traumatic whitewater rafting accident, I entered the Leadville Trail 100 Run. It was my first attempt at 100 miles, and I was just grateful to be there, healthy and in one piece. Winning was not part of the plan. But that’s exactly what happened.
